Really, who doesn't love a cookie? From Oreos to Grandma's homemade to gourmet creations, they're all good. We are introduced to them as children and really never lose a taste for that baked combination of basic ingredients that come together to be so much more than the sum of its parts.

Cookies have serious history. Their written origins begin in 7th century AD Persia, shortly after the use of sugar became relatively common in that region. They spread to Europe through the Muslim conquest of Spain. By the 14th century, they were common in all levels of society throughout Europe, from royal cuisine to street vendors. In reality, they're probably as old as baking is.

Four words: caramel-pretzel-chocolate chunk. Sounds weird, but it's soooooo good. They have a bunch of fun flavors including Mexican hot chocolate, Cheetos, and rugelach. Also, their gluten-free offerings do not disappoint! Their menu changes day-to-day, so check the website or just take your chances. Chances are good.

Cake Monkey Bakery

Elizabeth Belkind and Lisa Olin of Cake Monkey were on our list of best cakes and now are back for their cookies. We like the Big O, a Mexican hot chocolate sandwich cookie filled with vanilla buttercream and the Li'l Merri, an oatmeal cream pie sandwich filled with maple buttercream.

The Sycamore Kitchen

Quinn and Karen Hatfield are the chef-owners of Los Angeles restaurants Odys + Penelope, The Sycamore Kitchen and The Mighty. At The Sycamore, they serve breakfast and lunch, but we're here to tell you that you should look into their cookies: rice crispy, peanut butterscotch, chocolate chip rye, chocolate fudge, and oatmeal toffee.

Owned by Chefs Walter and Margarita Manzke, République features a casual bakery, café, and bar in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily. Their cookie selection varies, but you won't be disappointed. (And the building is amazing.)

Lodge Bread Company

Yes, they have amazing crusty loaves and pizzas. And yes, they have really good cookies. The everything cookie is our favorite which has cranberries, coconut, cashews, dates, and dark chocolate with just enough dough to hold all of that together. The oat poppy ginger and miso chocolate cookies are delicious as well.

Deluscious Cookies & Milk

This is the place where really good corporate gifts come from (and where the Academy Awards, Grammys and Golden Globes organizers shop). Thin and crispy or thick and gooey, their cookies are really decadent, including the gluten-free varieties. Our favorites are the cinnamon brûlée and chocolate decadence, and the vegan gluten-free triple chocolate walnut brownie.

Zooies

In other places of the country, it's not surprising to get great food at a gas station (that's a topic for another article), but cookies? Yes. And not far from where we live, just south of Beverlywood at United Oil. Zooies makes cookies that are thick and chewy, and just so good. Thry the walnut gooie or the peanut butter with chocolate chip. The almond is also yummy.
