There are many different reasons why you may be house hunting far from home: you're being relocated for work or you're in the military and on the verge of a PCS; your child is moving away to school and you want to buy a house/condo instead of using on-campus housing; or you're looking to invest in a rental property in a different market. Almost all of the reasons you might be long-distance house-hunting are the result of a major life event, and sometimes those can be stressful. In any case, here are our tips for long-distance house-hunting:

  1. Research the area: Look into the neighborhood and make sure it's a good fit for your needs and lifestyle.

  2. Work with a local real estate agent: An agent familiar with the area can provide valuable insights and answer questions about the community and local market.

  3. Virtual Tours: Take advantage of virtual tours and online resources to get a feel for the properties you're interested in.

  4. Consider hiring a home inspector: They can provide a detailed report on the condition of the property, which can help you make an informed decision.

  5. Plan a trip: If possible, make a trip to the area to see the properties in person and get a better feel for the neighborhood.

  6. Get to know the market: Familiarize yourself with the local housing market and prices to avoid overpaying or getting caught in a bidding war.

  7. Keep communication open: Regular communication with your agent and other key players can help ensure a smooth transaction.
